Orthodontic treatment is one of the recognized dental specialties as it relates to the correction of malpositioned teeth and the jaws. When a patient seeks orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist evaluates the patient to see if the problems with malpositioning is due to the teeth, the skeleton or both. The orthodontic diagnosis includes a clinical evaluation by a qualified dentist as well as study models and some form of an x-ray. The orthodontist may order a Cephalometric x-ray or a 3 D cone beam depending on the complexity of each case. Sometimes the orthodontist also wants to see a full set of x-rays to determine the patient’s bone level and also evaluate the patient’s dental caries risk before beginning the orthodontic treatment.
There are many types of orthodontic treatment and a dentist can offer you all of the options that are available. In summary the following orthodontic treatment are what a dentist may suggest:
1. Removable Orthodontic Treatment:
This will include treatments such as use of various orthodontic retainers, Inman retainers, Invisalign, Simply Clear, Clear Correct to name a few
2. Fixed Orthodontic Treatment: Traditional brackets that are bonded on to the tooth structure and they can be of a metal bracket or a porcelain one. These brackets will all have a slot that will accommodate a specialized orthodontic wire that is secured in place with a rubber band. The rubber bands come in all sorts of colors and can be fun for many patients to change color through out their dental treatment.
Young patients as young as 12 years of age when all of the permanent teeth have come in must be evaluated by an orthodontist. However, it is a great idea that patients even younger to have their teeth evaluated as sometimes corrective measures can be considered to avoid full blown orthodontic treatment. There are no upper age limits for patients even-though it may take a little bit longer in a matured individual due to the maturity of the bone to shift teeth. A common orthodontic procedure for adult patients are tooth up-righting and space alignment for placement of dental implants or fixed dental bridges.
|When is the ideal time to seek treatment ?|
| Age twelve to thirteen years when all the permanent teeth are erupted. The jaws are growing at this age and so it is easier to expand your jaws and reshape your mouth.
However, it may be worth seeking advice even earlier. By the age of seven, most of the permanent teeth have come in and enough jaw growth has occurred that the dentist or orthodontist can identify current problems, anticipate future problems or alleviate parents' concerns if all seems normal.
|Am I too OLD for orthodontic treatment?|
Nevertheless no age limit for orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment can easily be done at an older age, if the dental and gingival condition is good. Most adults get orthodontic treatment because they realize that taking care of your smile is part of taking care of yourself. Also used for cosmetic purposes by teenagers.
|Metal braces (stainless steel) are most commonly used. Many patients enjoy having different colors placed on their braces as a means of personal expression and fun. Because it's so simple to change the colors, feel free to swap them at every visit.|
